Tom Monaghan was an incredibly helpful mentor for me, as he was for countless others. Tom hired me to assist him in his trial practice at Monaghan & Leahy the spring and summer of 1978, just after my first year in law school. Tom took so much time and interest in taking me to trials, showing me how to research, and giving tips on drafting pleadings and orders, including the first and probably only permanent injunction for removal of a building in Lincoln County, my home county. He had an uncanny ability to size up people quickly and accurately.

One day, while I drove Tom to Boston for an eye appointment, he not only graded multiple blue book bar exams as a bar examiner but also regaled me with lessons on many legal concepts, practice management skills, and valuable legal war stories.. Though Tom knew from before he hired me that I wanted first to try practicing law in Boothbay Harbor on my own after graduation, he assured me they would save me a place in his firm. Tom devoted much time and energy passing on to me so many skills, both legal and universal, that I have treasured these past 36 years of my solo practice in Boothbay Harbor. Tom has made a huge difference in my life, as he has for countless others, in and out of law practice.. Tom Monaghan's legacy will linger and resonate a long time.

So sorry to learn of Tom's passing. First he was my neighbor and friend on Falmouth St. in Portland.. His sons and my sons were neighborhood buddies. I worked for Tom from 1978 to 1987 and left when I moved to Florida. I often compared my work experience with Monaghan and Leahy to other firms - how lucky I was to learn from him and his partners. Condolences to the Monaghan family from the Littlefields. We have so many good memories of the neighborhood and fun times w/ the family. Tom was a fantastic guy to many of us for so long. He supported us and cheered us on. Those of us involved remember how he took great pride in his church league basketball coaching including one memorable game that he led us to victory.

I was so saddened to read this today. I was so very lucky to have had the opportunity to work for Tom and his firm many years ago. I will never forget his kindness after the death of our baby.   He was a good man. Thinking of you, Janise. xo

My most touching impression of Tom is the wonder and love that he showed for his grandchildren.  His pride and love for this wonderful brood of offspring seemed unconditional, and their lives will keep a piece of him living on.
My love to you, Janise, and your exceptional family.

I worked at Monaghan Leahy for 25 years and Tom was the figurehead there for many of those years before he retired. He was well respected and much loved. He will be missed.

Tom was one of the "good guy" trial lawyers whose word was his bond. He was worthy adversary and a fine man. Rest in peace in the arms of God.
