Whalen "Willy" Guimond Obituary

Portland - Whalen Lawrence "Willy" Guimond, Westbrook, 84, died after a heroic battle with Parkinson's on May 2, 2023.  He was born on September 16, 1938, in Caribou, Maine, the son of the late Reney and Laura Guimond. Whalen graduated from Portland High School, Class of 1957.  After graduation he proudly served with the U.S. Army and Marine Reserves.  

Whalen married his childhood sweetheart, Katherine (Kay) Ferrante on July 1, 1961 and they were married 62 years.  Whalen joined the Portland Fire Department in 1968 and retired after 30 years as Captain of Ladder 1.  Whalen was a loyal member of the Catholic church and attended faithfully.   He was known for his quick wit, great sense of humor, and loved to tell a good story.  He was also known for always being stylishly  dressed.  Whalen really loved to watch his grandsons play sports and it was rare for him to miss an event.  

Whalen was predeceased by his parents Laura and Reney. , brother Lincoln and his wife Patricia.  Surviving in addition to his wife Kay, are his son Rocco and fiancé Michelle Theriault of Portland, Whalen II and his wife Catherine of Portland, and Hubert and his wife Amy of Portland; four grandchildren, Samson and wife Mariah, Bronson and fiancé Sarah Hogan, Dominic and Donovin, and 2 great-grandchildren Samson and Lucas; sister Maureen Pompeo and her husband Rocco of Portland and many nieces and nephews.  

A  Mass of Christian Burial Celebrated at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St, Portland  at 10:00am on June 5, 2023. 

Our family is extremely grateful to the Veterans Administration for the years of care Whalen received from them.  We would also like to thank Julie from Hospice of Southern Maine, Laurie from Elara Caring, and Stacey Perry for their kindness and care towards Whalen.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital.
