Susan Louise Eastman, 80, Captain US Army Nursing Corps, passed on August 14, 2023 at the Maine Veterans' home of complications from a neurological disease, likely caused by exposure to Agent Orange during her service in Vietnam.
She was predeceased by her father Donald Eastman, her mother Helen Hopperstad and her brother Eric. She is survived by her husband Carl Edward Lacy of Gray, Maine, and her beloved cats Frankie, Rosie and Bub.
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Susan grew up in North Platte, attended St. Olaf college graduating with a BS in nursing. In college Susan was deeply involved in music and performed in the premier a cappella St Olaf choir, known for their holiday season performances.
After college Susan enlisted in the Army Nursing Corps and served in Vietnam, lived briefly in San Francisco before moving to Sweden in 1968 to study weaving in Stockholm, and then to Norway, to work in elder care.
Returning to the US, Susan relocated to Massassachusetts, where she continued her nursing career, was active in church choirs, and performed professionally, both voice and violin.
Moving to Maine in 1994 after Susan and her husband built their home there, Susan contined to work in nursing, Susan worked at Brighton Medical Center as Quality Director, and at Cigna Insurance and Patient Advocates in quality control.
In retirement Susan trained and worked as a licensed massage therapist, performed in the Oratorio Chorale of Brunswick, Maine and raised a flock of twenty three sheep, whose wool she spun and wove, producing beautiful gifts for her friends.
Susan lived an interesting and vibrant life, acting as the nexus of friends from diverse backgrounds who will greatly miss her contributions to their lives.
