Peter Joseph Profenno, 69, died October 18, 2023, at CornerStone Hospice in the Villages, Florida after a long battle with cancer. Peter and Dena moved from Gray, Maine to Ocala, Florida in July of 2022 to be near their granddaughter, Emma, and to escape the snow and cold. He was born April 2, 1954, in Portland Maine to the late Peter J. Profenno and Bernice M. (Fickett) Profenno.
Peter grew up on Munjoy Hill in Portland and knew everyone. He couldn’t go anywhere without seeing someone from the “hill”. Peter graduated from Portland High School, class of 1972 where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He loved sports, especially the New York Giants as he was a true die-hard fan. After graduation he attended the former Maine Vocational Technical Institute, graduating in 1974 with a 2-year degree in Industrial Engineering. In 1975 Peter joined the Air Force serving a total of 30 ½ years with the 265th Combat Communications Squadron in So. Portland. From 1980-1995 Peter was a volunteer firefighter with North Windham Fire Dept leaving the department as a Lieutenant. Being with the ANG 265th and Windham Fire Department he made countless close friends and colleagues that were very dear to him. Over the years Peter worked at BIW, S.D. Warren Paper Mill, Delta Airlines, Unum, the Portland Civic Center, and the City of Portland. On May 15th, 1993 Peter married his wife Dena and lived 20 years in Windham, Maine raising their two children.
He is survived by his wife Dena A. (Rowell) Profenno, son Peter James Profenno (PJ), daughter Lena Margaret (Maggie) Madsen, her husband Marinus and daughter Emma Grace, all of Ocala, Florida. Along with his three sisters Peggy Veroneau of Scarborough, Barbara Renna and her partner Wayne Allen of Windham and Marie Profenno of Portland. Emma will forever be known and loved as “Papa’s pretty girl”. Peter had several nieces and nephews he loved and was so very proud of, including their children.
We wish to express heartfelt thanks to The Florida Cancer Specialists (Dr. Fawole and staff), The Villages Hospital and Casa Bella Hospice. Such wonderful caregivers full of kindness, warmth and understanding.
