Portland - Mildred (Millie) King Knight, 80, died on January 04, 2024, surrounded by her family. Millie was born in Portland, on September 27, 1943, the daughter of Byron and Anna King.
Millie was a graduate of Cathedral High School, Class of 1961. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Maine Medical Center, the Sisters of Mercy Infirmary, and the Barron Center, where she retired in 2009.
Millie was a devout Catholic and communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
She continued her passion for helping others, even after retirement. She was always willing to lend a hand whether it was babysitting or providing rides for her grandchildren. Grammie, or The Millster, as the grandchildren lovingly called her, enjoyed taking them out to lunch, movies or to see The Harlem Globetrotters. Millie also cared for her sister, Elaine, prior to her passing in 2021.
Millie loved to dance and play the spoons. She had a great sense of humor and was often the life of a party. She enjoyed playing cards on Sundays with her sisters and playing slots at Oxford Casino. She looked forward to going to lunch with her work friends and her annual class reunions. We will miss her deeply!
Millie was predeceased by her parents, Byron and Anna King; infant brother, Thomas King; sisters, Carolyn Thuotte, Jean King, and Elaine King.
Millie is survived by two daughters, Lisa and her husband Mark Maguire of Westbrook and Lori and her husband Craig Ibarguen of South Portland; two sisters, Theresa Murphy of South Portland and Laura Moody of Windham; three grandchildren Kelly Maguire, Anthony Maguire and Sophia Ibarguen, many nieces and nephews, and her good friend, Norma. She was also very fond of her grand dogs, Holly, Rosie and Ginny and was known for always having a bag of treats in her pocket.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern Maine for their care and compassion. They would also like to extend a special thank you to Ben and Joan Murray for their help and support throughout the years.
Per Millie’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 12, 2024, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 492 Ocean Ave, Portland, Maine. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Millie’s memory to STRIVE, 28 Foden Rd., South Portland ME 04106 or to a charity of your choice.
