Martin William Bennett Sr. 78, died at home in Gorham on December 19, 2023, following a recent cancer diagnosis. He was born on November 29, 1945, in Blaine, Maine, the 6th child of 8 born to the late John Henry Benner and Myrtle Grace (Williams) Benner. He is also predeceased by his siblings Kenneth R. Bennett, Dorothy L. Bennett Houtz, John H. Bennett, Clyde B. Bennett, Pauline L. Bennett Mikkelsen, Keith L. Bennett, and Wallace R Bennett Sr.
Martin (Marty) married Donna Lee Grant of Portland as teenagers and shared their lives together with their 3 children residing in Standish Maine until her death on December 19th, 2012. Following the death of his wife Marty moved to Gorham and lived a much-deserved simple life of golfing and leisure.
In his youth, Marty dropped out of middle school in order to work on the potato farms of Aroostook County to help support his family. After getting married he often worked 3 jobs, eventually beginning his own business, Martin W. Bennett Painting. He grew his residential painting business into a trusted local craft, eventually retiring and passing the business to his son, Steven.
Marty is survived by his children, sons Martin W. Bennett Jr and his wife Angela, Steven R Bennett, daughter Lorna C (Bennett) and her husband Keith M. Samara. Marty also leaves behind Grandchildren Martin W. Bennett III, Mackenzie Bennett, Steven R. Bennett Jr. Dannielle A. Bennett, Alexander M. Samara, Shane M. Samara, Aaron M. Samara, and several great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 11 AM Friday December 29, 2023 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue in Portland. Visitation will be held from 4-6 PM on Thursday December 28, 2023.
Burial will be in Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
