South Portland- Kay Owen Giglio, 87, passed a way on Thursday, October 28, 2021 of complication resulting from Covid.
She was born on July 23, 1934 to the late John H. Owen and Vera (Nelson) Owen in Portland, Maine. Kay was the youngest of nine children, one brother and seven sisters. They all grew up on the East End in Portland. Deering Oaks was the family playground from ice skating to family gatherings to feeding the squirrels and birds by the duck house and fountain at the pond. She graduated from Portland High School.
In 1969, Kay married the love of her life, Peter J. Giglio. She was step-mother to his six children. Her other great loves were her “furry kids”; her dogs Gargie, Izzy, and Bella, as well as all other animals that crossed her path. In her early years, she worked at Leadbetter’s Bakery and Central Yarn Shop.
She went on to work at Maine Bonding and Casualty, Insurance Co, and then many years as bookkeeper for Hannaford. In her last job, she worked at Head Start. The kids loved “Miss Kay”. She had many interests including reading, animals, collecting, and selling antiques, art, gardening, crafting, and genealogy.
Kay is survived by her sister, Constance Way, Sunapee, NH. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and all of their children. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Wendy Ray, who provided Kay so much comfort both professionally and personally for many years. Kay was a two-time breast cancer survivor.
Also, many thanks to the staff at Pinnacle of South Portland Nursing Home. A Special Thank you to charge nurses Marie and Todd and their team at Pinnacle, who made her last days peaceful and painless.
The family will hold a private remembrance celebration in the spring. A burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
In Lieu of flowers her wish is for people to do plantings or adopt a pet in her memory. Memorial donations can also be made in her memory to any animal refuge league or a non-profit children’s organization of your choosing.
