James Finley III Obituary

SOUTH PORTLAND – James Joseph Finley III, 64, passed away on January 21, 2022 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. James was born on March 24, 1957, in Portland, Maine to James and Jean (Cushing) Finley.

James (Jimmy) was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend.  In 1967, he was one of five founding members of Woodfords School that is now Woodfords Family Services which provides clinical, behavioral health and educational programs to more than 1,500 children, youth and adults living with autism, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities and/or mental health diagnoses across the State of Maine. Throughout his life, he enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics, swimming, watching WWE, listening to Music (Elvis was his favorite) going to the movies and Beech Ridge Speedway, watching NASCAR and playing video games.

Jimmy will be remembered for his love for his family and friends, his infectious smile, his laugh, and his wonderful sense of humor.  Despite his handicaps, Jimmy thrived and had a wonderful and productive life.  He loved unconditionally and made everyone he met feel special.  His charm and ability to connect with the world was truly a gift and made us all better people.

Jimmy lived at home most of his life under the care of his family.  Later in life, he moved to assisted living homes provided through the Lutheran Social Services which is now Ascentria Care Alliance.  His family would like to thank all the caregivers throughout his life that made his life so enjoyable.  We would also like to thank the Doctors and Nurses in the Special Care Unit at Maine Medical Center that provided compassionate and loving end of life care.

He was predeceased by his father James “Bud” Finley Jr.

He is survived by his mother Jean Finley, His sisters and brothers-in-law Cynthia and Ben Braasch, Colleen and Chris Olsen, Claudia and Bubba Foster, and Charlene and Jim Stewart.  His brother Mark Finley and his brother and sister-in-law Sean and Jennifer Finley, 10 nieces and nephews and 6 great nieces and nephews.
