Gregory St. Angelo Obituary

Gregory St. Angelo, age 84, passed away, due to complications from Alzheimer’s,  on Monday, October 15, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Greg was born on December 2, 1933, to Gregorio Sant Angelo, an Italian immigrant from Roccamorice, Abbruzzi, Italy, and Philomena Ferrucci St Angelo of Portland.

Greg attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1951. He was an excellent student and athlete. Greg played baseball, football and was the “sparkplug” on the 1950 State Champion basketball team. He was known as the “sparkplug” because he was the shortest and fastest member of the team. Also, during Greg’s senior year, he was awarded the Petri Award as the top male Scholar/Athlete.

After high school, Greg attended Portland Junior College for one year, then transferred to UNH where he received a degree in history. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. As a member ROTC, Greg entered the Army and graduated from officer training school in 1956. He married his high school sweetheart, Norma Beller, on the same day. Together they raised their 2 boys (Gregory III and Stephen) and one daughter (Paula).

Greg taught for one year in the Standish school system before staring his career in insurance. He worked for Royal Globe Insurance from 1957 until 1970. During that time the family lived in Albany, NY, Meriden, CT and Glen Rock, NJ. Greg returned to Portland and started working for Campbell, Payson and Noyes (CPN). He was their insurance expert that would help agents sell his products to their clients. Commercial Union Insurance Company purchased CPN and Greg rose to be the VP for Northern New England. He was proud of the fact that in this entire world-wide company, his office and his employees were the only ones to show a profit for 26 consecutive years. Greg retired in January 1999.

Greg was an avid reader, always had a great sense of humor, enjoyed traveling the world and enjoyed people, both young and old.

Greg was involved with many church and community organizations throughout his life. Among them were: Catholic Diocese of Maine Finance Committee, Catholic Charities of Maine, Boys and Girls Club of Portland, St. Peter’s Holy Name Society, St. Peter’s Parish Council, Deering Pavilion Board, Maine Charitable Mechanics, Salvation Army, and the Woodfords Club. Also, while raising his family, he coached Tidbit Football, PeeWee Baseball and Little League.

Greg was predeceased by his grandmother, Pasqua Rosa DiMillo Ferrucci, his parents, a sister Lena and her husband Howard Duchesneau, a niece, Christina Spaulding, a nephew, Paul Duchesneau, brothers-in-law, Richard Emery and Clinton Ifill.

Greg is survived by his wife Norma, sons Gregory, III (Molly) and Stephen (Terri), a daughter, Paula Guaciaro (Steven), sisters, Maria Ifill and Elena Emery; along with grandchildren, Gregory IV (Ashley), Nicholas, Greta, Christina, Gabriella, Anthony, Martina, Heather, Francesca, Mary and Steven. He is also survived by his cousins, Anne White, Mary Ann Foley and Tom Ferrucci, along with several nieces and nephews.
