Gladys Rea Obituary

Cape Elizabeth-Gladys Lillian (Carter) Rea, 76, passed away on Monday, February 22,2021 after a long battle with COPD at Maine Medical Center with her family by her side. Gladys was born on September 11, 1944 in Marlborough, MA to Joseph and Patricia (Tracy) Carter.

Gladys was raised at Hancock Point and graduated from Sumner High School. She moved to Portland to attend Key punch school and met her husband Maxelle Rea Jr. and married on September 11, 1965. She spent the next five years travelling with her Marine husband and returned to Maine in 1971.

Gladys worked for many years at JJ Nissen’s bakery and IBC until her retirement in 2011 as a key punch and computer operator. She was a member of the Portland Odd Fellows and Rebekahs and the Cape Elizabeth Lions.

Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Sr. and Patricia, her stepmother Winnifred and her brother Joseph, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Maxelle, her three sons, Maxelle 3rd and his wife Tina of Wausau, WI, Roy and his wife Tina of Buxton, ME, Gary and his wife Jessica of Uxbridge, MA. She is also survived her sister Jennifer and her husband Tim Kennedy of Raymond, NH; along with grandchildren Alanah and her husband Joe Barilla of Parsippany, NJ, Cheyenne, Roy Jr, Justin, Alan, Kaia, Keira, Rachel, Nathan; great grandchildren Ace, Aubrey, Kyle Jr, and Roy 3rd and many nieces and nephews. All whom she loved dearly. She will be greatly missed by all.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2021 from 2-4 PM at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland. Following CDC guidelines, masks and proper social distancing are required for all those in attendance. A private burial will be held at a later date.
