Edward Klaiber, MD Obituary

Edward Leo Klaiber, M.D., 89, of Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 31, 2021, at Falmouth by the Sea.  He was born December 7, 1931 in Syracuse, New York, son of Emil and Ann Klaiber.  He received his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center at Syracuse.  Following graduation, he completed his internship and residencies at King County Hospital in Seattle.  While working on a Fellowship in endocrinology in Syracuse, he met his wife of 58 years, Jean (Jeanne) Mays of Hammondsport, New York.  They settled in Princeton, MA in 1964, where they raised their three children and lived for 50 years.

Ed and Jeanne worked together running his private medical practice which served patients in the greater Worcester area until 2013.  A leading researcher and clinician in the field of psychoneuroendocrinology, he was a Senior Scientist at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology and President of the Broverman Memorial Institute Research Foundation.  His research consisted of more than eight chapters of medical texts and he had 60 peer reviewed articles published.  He was a member of The Endocrine Society, The North American Menopause Society, The Worcester Medical Society and The Massachusetts Medical Society.  In 2000, Ed authored the book “Hormones and the Mind,” which detailed key findings of his research and presented them in layman terms.

Ed loved to read, garden, ski and sail and he enjoyed vacations on Cape Cod and Lake Winnipesaukee with his family.  His parties for friends, family and colleagues are fondly remembered by all those who attended.  His greatest joy was his family.

Ed was predeceased by his brother James and his wife Marjorie and their daughter Cindy.  He is survived by his sister Catherine and her husband Pete, his wife Jeanne, their daughter Carrie and her partner John, their son Steve and his wife Jonna, and their son Rob and his wife Kristy.  His beloved grandchildren are Zachary, John and Cecelia; nieces Amy and her husband Jim, Liz and her husband Gary; nephews Bill and his wife Anne, Eric and his wife Pamela; and Jeanne’s sister Linda and her husband Nat.

Ed’s celebration of life will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in honor of Ed to Falmouth by the Sea, where he was lovingly cared for, at 191 Foreside Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.
