David Perry Obituary

David Warren Perry, age 85, died Thursday morning, March 1, 2018 at the Barron Center in Portland.

David was born June 2, 1932, in Brattleboro, VT to Velma Lillian Halle Perry and Ralph Morgan Perry.  He graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1951 and joined the Navy shortly after graduation. He never liked being “land bound” and enjoyed traveling and being on the water. He was a Storekeeper First Class on a destroyer for many years. He often commented that there was only one continent that he hadn’t been on, and that was Australia.

On February 15, 1969, he was in a severe car accident while traveling home to Newport, RI. He was in the hospital for a year and had many pins placed in his legs. Because of this, he honorably retired from the Navy. After being released from the hospital, he moved to Buxton, Maine, to live with his best friend, Linwood Wallace. He enjoyed raising chickens, “his girls”, as he affectionately called them, and rabbits. They enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City and to many fairs around New England.

After Linwood passed away, David sold his chickens and rabbits and moved to Westbrook. He got a job at Hannafords and worked there for several years. During his time in Westbrook, he started volunteering at the Barron Center working with the Alzheimer’s patients. That is where he met his companion of 24 years, Donna Light. He enjoyed working at the Barron Center, driving the bus for the patients, traveling with Donna, going to dances, and spending his extra time reading. He truly loved all that he did.

David is survived by:  his companion Donna Light of Falmouth; children, Kathleen, David, and Lorraine of Newport, RI; sisters, Nancy Bulley of Portland, and Brenda Bowman of Westbrook.

Donna, Robin, Nancy and Brenda would like to thank all of the staff at the Barron Center on 2 South for the wonderful care they gave David.  Along with Donna’s selfless care, he was able to enjoy the last few years of his life. He always brightened up when they spoke to him or offered him chocolate!!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s name to the Barron Center, 1145 Brighton Ave., Portland, ME 04102.
