Cumberland-Clayton Maxwell Clark 89, of Cumberland passed away at home on March 9, 2018 after
a long illness.
Born on June 30, 1928 in Portland, Maine to Maxwell V. Clark and Edith Hall Clark.
He was the eldest of three children. He had two sisters, Norma and Carole
He graduated from South Portland High School, South Portland, Maine in 1946 and
on May 6, 1950 married his high school classmate, Marion Neuts. They had two
lovely daughters: Sandra Jean and Linda Marie
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Yarmouth, Parish of the Holy Eucharist.
Clayton was a very quiet person until he got to know you. He liked being in the
background. He worked for Hanson Construction Company as a finish carpenter/foreman for 18 years. After Mr. Hanson’s retirement he worked for Palanza Construction Company,
Ben Hamilton & Sons Construction Company and Stonehenge Construction Company.
Clayton built two beautiful homes for his family. He enjoyed making wooden items each year for the church Christmas Fair as well as items for family and friends. He had no formal training in art but had a natural knack for it. He especially enjoyed painting ocean scenes. He and Marion looked forward to Saturday nights getting together with a group of wonderful friends going out to eat, theater, playing cards or square dancing. Clayton and Marion enjoyed bus trips around the country, trips to other countries and a cruise to the Panama Canal. He loved working in his vegetable garden. Clayton’s great accomplishment was hiking to the top of Mt. Katahdin and often spoke about the beautiful view he saw when he reached the top. Each summer he enjoyed sitting in his favorite chair on the porch at his camp on Forest Lake in Cumberland watching the grandchildren and great-grandchildren play and learn to swim. In the evening he and Marion enjoyed sitting on the porch overlooking the lake watching the beautiful sunsets. He called this his “Little Piece of Heaven.”
