Roger (Dad) came into my life long after he had retired from the ministry. I never heard him preach, so I had a very different – and authentic experience of knowing him, especially as I visited him almost daily at Sunrise Assisted Living. He always had a story… sometimes good… sometimes not so… but ALWAYS funny. I experienced his openness to all people… his ability to look you in the eye and see through you... and his honesty and directness as we pondered life’s foibles and joys. Most of all, I remember his decidedly nasty jokes. I looked forward to visiting him. He was so human - not perfect – but he never stopped trying. I saw his ups and his downs. I saw how much he wanted to keep on living – every day. We called him the comeback” guy. I treasure that time with him and to have known him and been there with him at the end.
