Belva Kathryn Carey

WESTBROOK - Belva Kathryn Carey, 79, passed peacefully on May 17, 2023 surrounded by loved ones at home. She was born to Joseph A. and Alberta (Greene) McDonald on September 15, 1943, in Portland, ME. She attended Portland schools and then moved on to become a homemaker, enjoying 54 years of marriage with the late Wallace H. Carey. She had seven children and raised two grandchildren.

Belva was known for her nurturing nature and big heart. When her kids were growing up, she was known as the “neighborhood mom”. She turned the littlest things into big treasures and loved making Christmas extra special.

Belva loved to play bingo and card games and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She took pride in being a grandmother and loved to joke about how she spoiled all her grandchildren. She had a warrior spirit, a humble approach to life, and was passionate about speaking her mind.

She is predeceased by her husband Wallace H. Carey, her sisters, Gloria Moody, Lois Small, Phyllis McDonald, and brother Lawrence McDonald.

She is survived by sisters Geraldine Wrench, Virginia Smith, Mary Brown, and her brothers, Arthur McDonald and Robert McDonald. Sons, Wallace Carey and wife Kim of Westbrook, Kevin Carey of Westbrook, and Frederick Carey Sr and wife Becky of Westbrook, daughters Carol Stetson of Westbrook, Lisa McDonough of Portland, Allison Carey of Westbrook, and Linda Conley and husband Dale of Westbrook. As well as 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25th 11am-1pm at AT Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland, Maine. A graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook at 2pm.
