Barry Scott Obituary

Barry E. Scott, 94, died peacefully at home with family at his side on Tuesday, December 19th, 2018.

In light of the life he lived, it must be said that Barry was a man of incredible honor, integrity, and commitment.  He was a gentleman.

Barry was born August 11th, 1924 in Lower Hainesville, New Brunswick, Canada, to parents Norman Scott and Alberta “Annie” Price Scott.  His family moved to Maine while he was very young, and he was drafted into the United States Army immediately after his high school graduation in 1943.  Serving with the 45th Infantry Division, Barry fought in several engagements in Italy and France, even fighting the enemy hand-to-hand, earning three Bronze Stars for his service.  He and several other soldiers were ambushed and captured, and Barry was injured, on September 18th, 1944, and he remained a Prisoner of War until May 1945.

On returning home, the GI Bill allowed him to attend the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance, in Boston, where he majored in accounting.  He began his own accounting firm, Scott Associates CPAs in Portland, where he worked until his 80th birthday.  He often spoke of how wonderful his clients were, and always endeavored to handle their accounts honestly and fairly.

He met his first wife, Mary Austin Scott, and married her in 1952.  She proved to be his soulmate for 54 years, until she died in 2006.  They had two sons, Steven and Kevin.

After Mary died, Barry moved to Dunedin, Florida, to be closer to his grandchildren, and because he loved the heat that was so different from his previous home in Portland.  There he met Lorraine and married her in 2008.  Eventually, the two returned to Maine.  They were married just shy of eleven years.

Barry was ever-faithful to his family; dedicated and tireless in serving them.  He was loyal and dutiful in the highest degree, as a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather.

He was well known to his friends and family for his gentle sense of humor, and for his kind demeanor.  He enjoyed traveling with his family and put on many, many miles over the years.  Barry did not consider himself to be a musician but did enjoy playing his harmonica.

Barry was predeceased by his mother and father, his brother Darrel, and his first wife, Mary.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his sons, Steven and Kevin, their respective wives, Wendy and Linda, and his grandchildren by Kevin, Jonathan and Katey Beth, his sister Doris Chest, brother Milton “Scottie” Scott and several nieces and nephews.

A special thanks goes out to Home Instead Senior Care (and his caregiver Shannon) for blessing Barry for the last couple of years.
