Arthur "Bob" Jones Obituary

Arthur “Bob” Ambrose Jones

Milo- Arthur “Bob” Ambrose Jones, 91, passed away peacefully September 22, 2023, at the Barron Center in Portland, Maine. He was born April 21, 1932 in Old Town, Maine as an only child to the late Florence M. Jones and Ambrose H. Jones.

Bob was raised by his mother, who instilled in him a passion for music at a young age. Bob played drums throughout his childhood and schooling at John Bapst High School (Class of 1950). His love for music led him to attend the Conservatory of Music in Bangor where he played the drums in local jazz bands. He met the “love of his life” Violette Currier while playing at a dance. The two were married July 28, 1952, and recently celebrated 71 years of marriage. Shortly after, Bob and Violette moved to Milo where they raised their two children, Cheryl and Jeff.

In 1967, after having worked at A&P Grocery Stores and attended Meat Cutting School in Boston, Bob built and ran Jones Market in downtown Milo. The market was known for its extensive assortment of penny candy, the meat department, and Bob’s famous steak sandwiches. Bob enjoyed conversations with his customers, and his sense of humor and storytelling to anyone who would listen were second to none. Bob and Violette’s free time was often spent enjoying time at Schoodic Lake with family and friends at their cottage that they built. Bob was an avid fisherman at Schoodic Lake and enjoyed his annual fishing trips with family to East Grand and Moosehead Lakes. Bob also loved hunting with family and friends at the hunting camp he built with Violette’s family.

Bob and Violette shared their love of faith, family, and dancing. Bob returned to his love for music after moving to Milo and joined the Lawrence Nadeau Band and later played in The Dick Sawyer Combo. Bob was a highly active parish member at St. Paul’s and St. Francis Xavier churches. There he served on the church council and was a lector, Eucharistic minister, and member of the Knights of Columbus.

After 25 successful years in business, Bob closed Jones Market. While he was retired, he spent 10 years driving the bus and working in the kitchen for the school department in Milo. He always said it was the best job he ever had – he was paid to watch high school sports and his meal was free on the way home.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Nicholas Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Violette; two children, Cheryl Morin and her husband Robert of South Portland, and Jeffrey Jones and his wife Lucia of Scarborough; four grandchildren, Megan Morin Taras (husband Michael), Matthew Morin (wife Holly), Natalie Jones and Andrew Jones (wife Maggie); five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is thankful for the dedicated care and support that he received at The Barron Center in Portland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Saturday October 7, 2023, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 128 Riverside Street in Milo. A burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Milo.
