Obituary

William D. Mayo, Jr. February 3, 2015 William D. Mayo, Jr., 83, of Portland passed away unexpectedly at his home, Tuesday, February 3, 2015. He was born in Portland, the son of the late William D. Mayo, Sr. of South Portland and Anna C. (Pedersen) Mayo of Denmark, Europe. Bill attended Portland schools. After the passing of Bill's father in 1948, Bill age 17 and brother Kenneth age15 kept the family trucking company in business to provide for the family of five. In 1955 Bill was employed by Eastern Construction as a truck driver and participated in the construction of the Baltimore Tunnel. He was employed by B.D. Stearns Meats 1957-1980. In 1980 Bill joined J.J. Nissen and retired in 1996. Bill's greatest joy was spending time with his family. In his youth, he enjoyed hunting and ice fishing with his father, brother and uncles. He also enjoyed camping with his wife and children and he was always there to cheer for his children during their sporting events. He was always happy to share stories about his childhood and his family history. His favorite story was the one of how he met the woman he would marry. Bill loved spending time with his sisters Elaine and Karen and their husbands and looked forward to their lunches together. Bill became known as 'Papa' the year he retired, a new title he was proud to don as son Scott and his wife Jennifer gave him and Nana their first grandchild, a beautiful granddaughter, the next year brought another blessing, a wonderful grandson and a few years later another sweet granddaughter! All three of his grandchildren were a great source of pride and joy to their Nana and Papa. He loved to be with them whether it be watching them play outside or telling stories and playing checkers. Bill is predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Rosalind (Foote), his parents William and Anna, his sister Stella and brother Kenneth. Bill is survived by his daughter Sandra Dyer and her husband Howard of Freeport, his two sons Douglas Mayo and his wife Lydia of Williamsburg, VA, Scott Mayo and his wife Jennifer of Belgrade, three grandchildren: Kelsey, Nicholas and Mackenzie Mayo all of Belgrade, as well as his sisters Elaine Lawrence and her husband Harry, Karen Sawyer and her husband Ray and many dear nieces and nephews. Bill will be remembered as a wonderful family man, selfless, kind and generous. He was a loving and devoted brother, husband, father and grandfather. The Mayo family would like to thank the Morin and Currier families for their friendship and support over the past 45 years.
