Obituary

William Butcher, 84, passed away on February 2, 2026, in South Portland, Maine. Born on June 28, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri, he lived a life marked by service, dedication, and deep affection for his family.

William began his career in the United States Coast Guard, where he rose to the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Chief (BMC), demonstrating leadership and commitment throughout his military service. Following his time in the Coast Guard, he continued serving his community as a South Portland Police Officer. His dedication and skill led him to advance to the SWAT team, where he played a vital role in ensuring public safety.

Family was at the heart of William’s life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Agatha Russo St. Pierre Butcher; his son Paul St. Pierre; his parents, William J. Butcher and Eleanor Butcher; and two sisters. He is remembered with love by Ralph and Christina St. Pierre; Fred and Bessie St. Pierre, William J. Butcher IV and Debra Butcher; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Among them, his first great-grandchild, Daniel St. Pierre, held a special place in his heart – William often referred to him as the apple of his eye and his pride and joy.

Affectionately known as Pop or Popop, William lit up with joy whenever visited by family or friends. His warm smile and welcoming presence left lasting impressions on those around him.

A man of many passions, Willam was an avid New York Giants fan who never missed a football game. He also enjoyed watching wrestling and NASCAR races. In quieter moments, he found comfort in classic television shows like Gunsmoke and old movies that brough back memories of earlier times.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 12, 206, 11:00 AM at New Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland.
