Obituary

Virgil E. Beane September 1, 1932 May 2, 2012 Cumberland - Virgil Elroy Beane, 79, of Cumberland died at his home, with his family by his side, on May 2, 2012. He was born in Solon, Maine on September 1, 1932, the son of Lawrence Rancourt and Florence Beane. He graduated from Solon High School in 1950 before enlisting in the United States Army, serving abroad in Germany. After his service, he returned home and graduated from Skowhegan Business School in 1956. He married Janice (Berry) and the two raised three sons. Later in life he married Priscilla (Bean) and raised a daughter together. Virgil enjoyed a long and full career in the trucking industry, beginning with Solon Manufacturing Company before serving as Operations Manager and Executive Vice President of Cole's Express in the 1960's and 1970's. He was elected as chairman of the Maine Motor Transport Association from 1983 to 1985. He was a lifetime member of the group's Board of Directors, served on the Executive Committee, was a charter Director of the Maine Truck PAC and was very much involved in MMTA establishing their scholarship fund which continues to grant several thousands of dollars in scholarships annually to deserving Maine scholars. Virgil was also elected chairman of the American Trucking Associations in 1994 and is the only native Mainer to lead the trucking industry at the national level. The MMTA's conference room was dedicated to Virgil in 1995 to honor his unselfish dedication to the trucking industry and a permanent raised bronze plaque is permanently displayed to remind all members, staff and guests of the attributes of such a special individual. He retired in 1992 as President of Hannaford Trucking Company and Vice President of Hannaford Brothers, Inc. A life-long Yankees and New York Giants fan, Virgil was a ""walking encyclopedia of sports statistics."" He enjoyed sports, but his true love was his family. He was a great father and a huge family man. Virgil is predeceased by his wife, Priscilla. He is survived by his three sons, Michael, Kevin and his wife Terri and Dan Beane and his daughter Rachel Thibeault and her husband Richard, his grandchildren, Alexandra, Emily and Kelsey Beane and the soon to be born Priscilla Thibeault.
