Obituary

Viola Evelyn Place October 19, 1926 July 21, 2013 Viola Evelyn Place, of Yarmouth, beloved Mother and Grandmother, passed away at the age of 86, on July 21, 2013 at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation & Residence Center following a lengthy illness with her family by her side. Viola was born in Portland on October 19, 1926 the eldest daughter of Annie Davis McGann and Harry McGann. The McGann family resided on Munjoy Hill in Portland before moving to the family farm of Clarence McGann in Buxton where she and her brothers and sisters shared many happy memories as children and throughout their adult lives. One of her fondest memories was the marriage of her beloved husband, Edward, on the farm in 1947. Until the passing of Uncle Clarence, Thanksgivings were held at the farm with great anticipation of the day's activity's by everyone. Everyone's next adventure could always be found at the farm. Viola's greatest happiness was spending time with her family and friends. Upon the death of her husband in 1962, she moved to Yarmouth where she spent the rest of her life. She devoted herself to her children and then her grandchildren. Always putting them and their needs above her own. She was always there for them in her own quiet way. She had very little but gave everything of herself. She instilled in them that nothing was more important than family, honesty and trust. Viola was a quiet woman who was admired by all who knew her for her strength and courage throughout her life. Viola graduated from Samuel Hanson High School in Buxton. She was employed by Health Tex as a button hole maker for children's clothing until its closing. She later became employed at Reese Corporation in Gorham until her retirement. Viola was predeceased by her husband Edward C. Place, parents Annie and Harry McGann, brother Donald McGann, sisters Geneva Sargent and Sylvia McMahon. She is survived by her children Paula McAuliffe and husband John of South Portland and Sharon Wescott and husband George of Freeport, grandsons Patrick McAuliffe of South Portland and George Wescott IV and fiancée Trisha Fortunato of East Patchogue, NY. She is also survived by brother Robert McGann of Freeport along with several nieces and nephews. Viola's family wishes to thank the staff at St. Joseph's for the kindness, love and dedication extended to Viola during her time with them, for sharing her journey with us and making it easier for us all. They also wish to thank Southern Maine hospice workers, Cindy, Shannon and Marie for their dedication during her final months and standing by and supporting us, making her transition as easy as possible. Thanks to you all for all that you have done! A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 11am at the Wilde Memorial Chapel in Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Ave. Portland. Arrangements are under the care of A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, Brighton Ave. Portland.
