Scarborough - Timothy Shane "Fitz" Fitzgerald, 77 of The Veterans Home in Scarborough, passed away Saturday July 20, 2024 at Maine Medical Center. He was born June 11, 1947 in Altadena, California, the son of Frank and Dora (Adams) Fitzgerald, the sixth of nine children. After starting his high school and football career in California, Fitz ended up graduating from high school in Ashland, MA after his family relocated to the East Coast.  Fitz was a U.S. Army Veteran, having voluntarily enlisted during the Vietnam Era. He was stationed primarily at USASTRATCOM Phu Lam, outside of Saigon, where he was a communications & IBM equipment specialist. After completing his service at Fort Ord, California and receiving an honorable discharge, Fitz spent some time traveling the West Coast before relocating to Boston. He lived for several years in Boston, working for the Red Cross, before making his way up to Portland, ME. Upon moving to Portland, he lived on Peaks Island and worked in the kitchen at the Old Port Tavern. A man of many talents, he went on to later work in the fields of early computing, data processing and warehouse operations before going to work for the US Postal Service, where he retired from the distribution center in Scarborough. After suffering a stroke and complications related to COPD, Fitz moved to the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough. He made the most of his time there, serving as a member of the Honor Guard. Fitz also enjoyed spending time with his Son Shane and his growing family,  beating his siblings in Cribbage (unless they were cheating), and catching some rays on the back patio. Members of his family include his son Covell Shane Fitzgerald, his Daughter-In-Law Annie Cavallaro and his Grandson Bennett, of South Portland; his siblings: Bill, Joseph, Kathie (Dec.), M, Michael, Patrick, Shelagh & Terry as well as many nieces & nephews. The Fitzgerald's would like to give special thanks to the dedicated staff of the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough. The compassionate and skilled staff on the C Unit allowed "Fitz" to live out his final years in dignity and comfort, surrounded by smiling and loving faces.          A time of visitation will be held Saturday August 17, 2024 from 1 PM to 3 PM with a memorial service to follow at 3 PM.
