Timothy Francis Flaherty January 25, 1943 January 20, 2013 Scarborough - Timothy F. Flaherty, 69, of Falmouth passed away on January 20, 2013 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his family by his side. He was born on January 25, 1943 in Portland, the second of seven children of Thomas S., Sr and Elaine (Sawyer) Flaherty. He attended Portland Schools before enlisting in the United States Coast Guard two months after his 17th birthday. He completed his high school education while in the Coast Guard. Tim retired in 2004 as an independent contractor with American Express, returning to Maine to enjoy his retirement. He enjoyed football and boxing, having been a boxer himself in the early 1970's. Tim was also an avid crossword puzzle solver. Tim was very active with the VFW and American Legion. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Brooklyn Valley Post 7790 in Waterbury, CT and was a Past Commander of the American Legion Harold T. Andrews Post 17 in Portland where he was selected as Commander of the Year for the State of Maine in 2010. During his time with Andrews, he helped to organize the Memorial and Veterans' Day parades in Portland. He also served on the V.N.A.R at Togus. Tim also enjoyed being a historian at Andrews, working on several projects with the Honorable Herb Adams. Another source of pride for him was finding sponsors for students to attend Boys' State in Maine. Tim was predeceased by his father. He is survived by his mother, his wife, Katherine (Dick) Flaherty, his brothers, Thomas S. Jr, and his wife Nancy of Falmouth, Peter and his wife Jayne of Old Orchard Beach, Paul and his wife Sandy of Westbrook and John and Michael of South Portland, his sisters Patricia Flaherty of South Portland and Kathleen Smith and her husband Donald of Old Orchard Beach. He is also survived by five step-children, Joey, Tammy, Danny, Candy and Cathy, and fifteen grandchildren, to whom he was known as ""Papa."" Friends and family are invited to visitation from 9:30 - 11am on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 11am, with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
