Thomas Gerald "Vito" Caiazzo, 80, passed away on March 31, 2026, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born on January 20, 1946 to Vincenzo and Assunta (DiFillipo) Caiazzo in Portland. Tom lived on his beloved Munjoy Hill for many years and attended Portland Schools where he made many lifelong friends.
In his early days, he worked for Nappi's Bakery, the City of Portland, Shaw's, and bartended at George's Tavern. He retired from Olympia Sports after suffering a heart attack. He enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox, and for years cursed at them until they finally won the World Series in 2004. He was very good at baseball in high school, and played softball and touch football after high school. He coached Babe Ruth during the 1980s. He traveled with his friend, Frankie Navarro, all over the country to watch Frankie's son Rocco play football for the University of Maine. He also followed Portland High School sports, attending baseball, football, and basketball games. His favorite football team was the Indianapolis Colts, but he strongly disliked the New England Patriots. He loved the UConn Women's basketball team but sometimes turned the channel because he was too nervous to watch.
He was well-known as the Mayor of Munjoy Hill. He knew everyone, their families, where they lived, and who they married. Friends would come to him to ask for information many times. He proudly organized the Munjoy Hill Boys' Reunions which were attended by many of his friends and others from the Hill, and donated to charities in their names. He so loved Munjoy Hill and always called the Eastern Promenade his playground, playing ball and hanging out with his friends
Later in life, he enjoyed watching sports on television, sitting in the shade at the Martin Family Camp on Little Sebago Lake, and talking about recipes and meals his mother used to make. He always entertained his many friends and family with stories of his youth. In 1979 he married Julie Martin and had their son, Thomas. He then was married to Barbara Whitmore until her death in 2014
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Philomena Vickerson, and his brother, Antonio “Drifter" Caiazzo.
Thomas' survivors include: his son, Thomas Il, his daughter Lisa Caiazzo, his beloved granddaughter, Tiana Caiazzo, and his partner, Julie Martin, all of Portland. He also leaves his stepdaughter Concetta DePaolo and her daughters Megan and Danny of Indiana. His surviving sisters are Grace Broy of Waterville and Mary Caiazzo of Westbrook, along with several nieces and nephews
We would like to thank the nurses and doctors at MMC's Special Care Unit who took such good care of him at the end. He left many special friends who are too many to mention here. He was well-loved and will be missed by many.
