Obituary

Stephen J. Flaherty July 27, 1954 March 7, 2012 Stephen J. Flaherty, 57 died on March 7, 2012 at home in Falmouth with his family at his side after battling a long illness. He was born in Portland, on July 27, 1954, the son of the late Captain James O. Flaherty of the Portland Fire Department and the late Joan Rivera Flaherty. Stephen was so proud of the fact that his father and his father-in-law, late Donald C. Stuart, had worked together as fire-fighters for the Portland Fire Department for many years long before he had met his loving wife Susan whom he married in 1992. Before moving to Falmouth Foreside, Steve and his wife spent many years in South Portland where they raised his daughter and son. Stephen graduated from Deering High School in 1972. He was in many softball and bowling leagues, but later in life his passion was golfing. He looked forward to the annual golf trips to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, but especially to Limestone, Maine with his buddies forever seeking the hole-in-one he once proudly achieved at Sable Oaks in South Portland, which is no easy feat many say. Steve was well known by those who knew him for his passion of baseball and football, specifically always cheering for the NFL New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He loved his family and great friends and enjoyed spending time with them. Steve served for a time on the board of the private club, the Fraternal Loyal Order of the Moose located in Scarborough, Maine where he volunteered his time as well enjoyed spending time with members he became close friends. He worked many years for The City of Portland, Suburban Propane and Irving Oil before working the family internet business Flahertymalls.com until it dissolved and his illness progressed. Stephen is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan; daughter Deanna Flaherty Yem, son-in-law Sergeant Chhayith Yem and grandsons Chhandarith, Chhay Stephen and Talan Yem all of California; son Owen Flaherty and fiancé, Jennifer Judkins, granddaughter Cynthia Flaherty and the soon to be born namesake grandson Stephen Flaherty all of Portland; sister Leigh-Ann Flaherty Papi and brother-in-law and best man Peter Papi, sister Gail Gordon and brother-in-law John Gordon of Maryland, Brother-in-law Donald Stuart and wife Darlene, sister-in-law Cheryl Roma and husband Jerry all of Westbrook; sister-in-law Catherine Jordan and husband Peter of Windham; sister-in-law Eilene Campbell and husband Wayne, mother-in-law Arlene Jones Stuart all of Gray/ New Gloucester, 41 nieces and nephews including great.
