Obituary

Sally Lee DeLuca Portland, Sally (Lee) DeLuca, 89, died peacefully at Gosnell House surrounded by the love of her family and friends on Saturday, June 21, 2025, just weeks after losing her beloved husband Dominic. Sally was born in Portland, Maine on July 17, 1935 the eldest daughter of James B. and Catherine (Conley) Lee. Sally attended Cathedral Grammar School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953 where she formed lifelong friendships. Sally and 'the girls' made every effort to get together frequently throughout the years. In 1956 she married Dominic A. DeLuca and they settled in Portland where they raised their seven children. Sally loved being a 'Mom' and said it was her greatest gift in life. After her children were grown, Sally launched a career first working for WGAN as the Public Service Director and years later for Attorney Joseph Bornstein. Mom was a social woman and loved meeting so many interesting people in both of these settings. Sally loved boating aboard the 'Sarah Lee' with her husband and children along the Maine Coast. Over the years the family visited many of the islands of Casco Bay and beyond. In retirement Sally and Dom spent many winters in Ellenton, Florida where she enjoyed the company of friends and the warm weather but her heart ached to be back in Maine with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the St. Peter's Sacred Heart Sodality and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RICA) at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church where she sponsored many adults on their journey of faith formation and participation in the Catholic Church. Sally was predeceased by her husband, Dominic; her parents Catherine and James; brothers John (Jack), David, and James as well as her sister, Janet Talbot. Sally is survived by sons James (Dorothy), and Daniel (Sue); daughters, Sally DeLuca, Karen (John) Caprio, Cathy DeLuca, Kelly (Keane) McGarvey and Sandra (Peter) Lekousi, her beloved sister, Rosemary Mulkern and her husband Richard, sisters-in-law Camilla Burns, Judy Lee, Peggy Lee, and Sharon Lee; 12 grandchildren: Michelle (Pete) Brusyo, Jason (Olivia) DeLuca, Tyler (Lucia) DeLuca, Daniel (Morgan) DeLuca, Chase (Annie) Caprio, Alex (Yesenia) DeLuca, Chelsea (Colby) Roy, Anthony (Sarah) Wheeler, Kaylee Wheeler, Sarah (Tyler) Wilcox, Elizabeth McGarvey and Abigail DeLuca as well as 11 great grandchildren (Number 12 in Sept.), and several nieces and nephews. Mom and Dad exemplified the meaning of becoming 'one' when they married and It was their wish to be laid to rest together. Visiting hours will be on Monday, June 30, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland, ME 04102. A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Tuesday, July 1, 2025, 10:00 a.m., at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St, Portland, ME 04101, followed by a committal service at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland. The DeLuca family would like to thank the staff at Fallbrook Woods for their kind and compassionate care of our Mom for the last year as well as Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for providing support and comfort during mom's final hours. Donations in Sally's name can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital a charity that mom and Dad supported their entire married life.
