Ruth Florence Eddy White July 7, 1906 May 13, 2013 Ruth Florence Eddy White Falmouth's oldest living resident passed away quietly on May 13, 2013 after a life well-lived. In August of 2011, she received The Golden Cane Award for being the oldest citizen in Falmouth Ruth was born in Dana, Massachusetts, on July 7, 1906, the daughter of Horatio B. Eddy, a farmer, and Ruth A. Holton. It was her father who taught Ruth early in life of importance of being independent and the necessity of financial responsibility. She schooled herself to manage her own investments and managed them enthusiastically throughout her life. In February 1935, Ruth married, Harrison Gates White a career US Navy man, of Springfield, Massachusetts, after which they resided in Springfield. Harrison White, who passed away in 1962, retired in 1946 as a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. Ruth herself was a WAVE enlisting in the "Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service" branch of the USN. Harrison introduced Ruth to the joys of hunting and fishing in Maine, which she greeted with her usual gusto for life, eventually building a camp together in northern Maine where they enjoyed their time out of doors hunting and fishing. Ruth became an avid fly-tier of highly sought after flies. Ruth was also highly-skilled at needlepoint, sewing, painting, gardening and loved poetry, music and acting. In 1973, Ruth moved to Applegate in Falmouth where she resided till she took up residence at Falmouth By the Sea in 2010. Ruth was an active communicant and devoted member of S. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church parish in Falmouth, Maine, since 1973 where she participated in S. Mary's many church sponsored activities, including Altar Flower Guild, the Kneeler Guild, Office Angels, chairing Hospitality and doing many memorial receptions, attending church services on Sundays and Thursdays. She was also a valued member of the Saint Mary's Garden Club. A funeral mass will be said for Ruth at S. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church, Foreside Road, Falmouth on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. following by a reception in the parish house. Ruth will be interred beside her late husband, Harrison, in the Hillside Park Cemetery in Springfield, Massachusetts, at a later date.
