Robert Roy Noble, III January 14, 1949 May 30, 2012 Portland - Robert Roy Noble, III, 63 of Portland passed away on May 30, 2012 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 14, 1949, the son of Robert Roy Noble, II and Margaret Anne (Sullivan) Noble of Heber Springs, Arkansas. Robert attended schools in Bridgewater, Massachusetts and Crossett, Arkansas. Following his graduation from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1973, he entered the United States Air Force. Stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Norman, Oklahoma, he traveled throughout the world as a weather technician until his honorable discharge in 1976. He returned to the Midwest and worked as a journalist and photographer for various daily newspapers until his marriage in 1981 to Virginia (Mangan) Noble, of Wakefield, Massachusetts. Robert graduated from the University of Massachusetts - Boston in 1984 with a B.S. in accounting and pursued a career in accounting in Boston and in Portland, Maine. After receiving a Master of Science in Taxation from Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts in 2005, he developed a tax practice, guiding many small businesses in Southern Maine. Robert was active in the Portland Boxing Club and other regional boxing organizations, serving in various roles and enthusiastically supporting local youths in the sport. He also enjoyed studying languages, and particularly enjoyed reading and conversing in French. In addition, he was a nature lover and enjoyed birding and gardening with his wife, and built a small meditation garden at their home on Munjoy Hill. In 2008, he obtained his Irish citizenship, a goal he had set after reconnecting with his mother's family on Bere Island, County Cork, Ireland. Robert guided numerous family members to the distant island and introduced them to their relatives as well as one of the more remote regions in Ireland. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his parents, Robert and Margaret Noble; brothers Donald Noble of Maumelle, Arkansas and Steven Noble of Arkansas; his sister Martha Gilbert of Davenport, Iowa; his cousin Desmond Sullivan and other relatives on Bere Island, Ireland and numerous nieces and nephews. Thanks to all of Robert's friends and family who supported him during this time. There will be a private gathering at a later date. Arrangements are by A.T.
