Naples, FL - Robert “Bob” Brewer, 83, passed away on March 20, 2026 after a valiant fight against cancer. He was born February 27,1943 in Rockland, Maine, the son of Robert and Phyllis Brewer. He met his wife Marie (Cavanaugh) Brewer of Rockport in high school. They later settled in Portland where they raised their family.
While at Rockland High School, Bob was an outstanding three sport athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. He especially excelled in basketball and was named first team all-state his senior year. He then attended the University of Maine at Orono and enjoyed a four year career on the basketball team.
After graduating college, he and his wife moved to Portland where he was a teacher and coach in the Portland schools. In 1971 he was hired by Cheverus High School as a math teacher and head basketball coach. He became one of the all-time great high school basketball coaches in the state of Maine during his time at Cheverus. Over his 26-year career his teams won 323 games, made the tournament every season but 3, and won state championships in 1981, 1982, and 1997. His 1981 team went undefeated. He was selected SMAA Conference Coach of the Year 5 times. He was also selected to coach at the prestigious Five Star Basketball Camp for 5 consecutive summers, coaching the top 100 players in the country at the time. He was beloved by his players, especially those from his teams during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He coached many all-state players who went on to successful college careers.
Bob was inducted into the Mid-Coast Sports Hall of Fame, Maine Basketball Hall of Fame and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of his tremendous achievements as a player and coach.
He was very dedicated to Cheverus High School. He was an extremely hard-working teacher who often stayed late after school to help students. He founded and ran a highly popular summer basketball camp at Cheverus. He also coached the tennis team for many years.
During the later years of teaching and coaching he began a career in real estate, first as a mortgage underwriter then as a sales agent. After retiring from teaching, he moved to Naples Florida where he became a very successful real estate agent, developer and property manager. He was well respected and always dedicated to serving the needs of his clients.
Bob positively impacted countless people throughout his life in immeasurable ways. His never-ending perseverance, exceptional work ethic, desire to mentor and help others were guiding principles his entire life.
Bob developed many close friendships during his career as teacher, basketball coach and real estate agent. He always enjoyed and looked forward to opportunities to catch up with his former players, clients and friends, especially those he made through basketball.
He is survived by his wife Marie, his children Chris Brewer (Deb) and Suzanne Brewer (Don Archibald) of Portland, his three grandchildren, Kate, Alex and Andrew, his brother Arnold Brewer (Carol), his sister Ruth Hussey, his niece Andrea Hageman who became a trusted and close business associate and several nephews and nieces.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 Pm on Wednesday April 22,2026 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, with a service to immediately follow.
