Richard (Dick) Harold Baldwin August 7, 1927 February 19, 2013 Richard (Dick) Harold Baldwin passed away at his home in Cape Elizabeth Tuesday afternoon, February 19, 2013, following a three year battle with bladder cancer. His daughter and his wife were by his side. Richard was born in Jonesville, Michigan on August 7, 1927, to Lawrence and Yetta (Nye). He was educated in the Jonesville schools and enlisted in the Navy Air Corps upon graduation. He was part of a Navy academic program which was suspended at the end of the war, at which time he moved to Chicago to finish his education where he earned a PhD at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He went to work for Standard Oil of Indiana (Amoco) as a chemical engineer, where he remained his entire working career until retiring in 1992. He developed multiple patents for the company, and traveled all over the world for his work. In his early days in Chicago he married Barbara Joan (Manas), an aspiring opera singer, and they had a son, Rich. Barbara was killed in a tragic auto accident when Rich was still a very young child. He married again in 1972 to Barbara Jo (Cherry) and they together had a daughter, Katherine. In 1998 they moved to Cape Elizabeth, fulfilling a dream to live by the ocean. Richard was a life-long lover and collector of classical music, and together they became very involved in the music culture of Maine. They were proud contributors to the PORT Opera, and Richard served on the board of the Portland Concert Association. After Barbara's passing in 2005, he married Nadine (Snyder), and they spent their days traveling and enjoying the Maine life. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and son Rich. He is survived by his wife Nadine, daughter Katherine of New York, and his sister Gloria Dietrich (Edward) of Scottsdale, Arizona. A reception will be held in his honor at the Cumberland Club, 116 High St., Portland (773-6402), Saturday February 23, 2013, from 12 noon to 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Mercy Hospital, Oncology Education Fund, 144 State Street, Portland, Maine 04101, or the Urology Education Fund, at the same address. Richard was very grateful to both programs for the commitment and care they provided him during his illness.
