Obituary

Richard "Rich" Avelon March 25, 1966 August 3, 2015       Richard "Rich" Avelon of Cumberland Foreside, Maine, passed away at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine on Monday, August 3, 2015. Rich died peacefully with his loving wife Julie Avelon and family by his side. He was born on March 25, 1966 in Oceanside, New York, son of Richard and Diane Aversano. Rich was a cum laude graduate of the City University of New York with a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and most recently worked as a Partner in Financial Services at Teradata.         Rich was an adventurer, always living life to the fullest, and was loved by so many for his kind heart. He was also a patient, devoted step-father and a gracious, loving husband. He was a passionate sailor and enjoyed spending days at sea with friends and family. In recent years he traveled extensively with his wife, often in search of the best food, wine and wind. Whether sailing, skiing the mountains or sharing one of his gourmet meals, Rich brought pleasure to all around him.     He is survived by his wife, his step-daughter Michelle Frizalone, his parents, and his sisters, Marianne Zirogiannis, Bethann Mazzitelli, and Suzanne Castorina. He will be missed by his many friends and extended family, upon whom his considerate spirit and true appreciation of life left a profound effect. Rich, in his last days, wanted his loved ones to know he is "Always onboard, wherever you go."     A celebration of Rich's life will be held at Fort Allen Park located at 49 Eastern Promenade in Portland, Maine on Sunday, August 9th at 10:00 AM. A ceremony will take place beneath the large tree to the left of the memorial featuring the mast of the USS Portland navy cruiser, 4339'58"N 7014'25"W. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to SailMaine, either directly through their website, sailmaine.org or mailed to SailMaine, 58 Fore Street, Portland, Maine 04101.
