Peter A Pompeo May 27, 1945 July 14,2016 Peter A. (Buster) Pompeo passed away on Thursday, July 14, at the family home in Portland. He was born in Portland on May 27,1945, the son of Peter James and Deneige Marie (Harvey) Pompeo. Peter grew up in East Deering in the home that his parent built together on Presumpscot Street. Peter graduated from Portland High School in 1963 and entered the United States Marine Corp Reserves, serving 6 years. He also became a member of the City of Portland's Fire Department serving for 30 years. Peter's last assignment was with Engine 11 on Ocean Ave., bringing him back to his old neighborhood, in East Deering. Like a lot of the members of the department, Peter had a second job and that was running Portland Furniture that was started by his father. Even with his health issues, Peter was still reupholstering furniture up until his untimely death this past week. Along with his family, another important part of Peter's life was baseball. Peter was a player and coach for many years with the Twilight League in Portland. He was also an umpire with Babe Ruth, Twilight League and Legion baseball. There were times that he also umpired college level games in the area. Peter had the honor of being inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. He is one of a handful of individuals that could say that he was a member of the Hall alongside his father. Peter also had a brief boxing career. Peter had a long standing love affair with the Boston Red Sox. For many years, he would head to Florida for spring training with family in tow. It would always end up being a three-week adventure. He became a member of the BoSox Club and enjoyed meeting many of the players over the years. Peter was a long time member of the Columbia Club in East Deering and a member of the Italian Heritage Center and the Elks in Portland. Peter also enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Southern Maine Beagle Club, with his dog Casey always being by his side. Another passion of his was spending time with his family at the camp on Sebago Lake. Peter was predeceased by his parents and his daughter Julie. He is survived by his son, Peter A. Pompeo, Jr. and his family and his son John Pompeo and his family; along with his former wife and friend Carolyn O'Brien and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert Pompeo and his sister Ann Marie Guevin and his brother-in-law Ronnie Guevin. He also leaves behind many nieces and a nephew, along with many cousins and friends, especially John and Rocco Pompeo. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 Am on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 72 Federal St., Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Peter was a long time communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.
