Obituary

Patricia Ann McGovern November 14, 1935 October 20, 2012 SCARBOROUGH - Patricia Ann McGovern, 76, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, entered the gates of heaven on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough with her family by her side. Born on November 14, 1935, Patty (Greenleaf) was one of four children born to Mary Frances (Flaherty) Greenleaf. Charlotte, Patty, Mary Jean (Tootsie), and David Greenleaf spent their childhood on Cumberland Avenue in Portland under the care of their mother. All were communicants of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. As youngsters the family played in the courtyard behind their apartment building and enjoyed outings at Lincoln Park swimming in the fountain and at Deering Oaks. Patty was a helpful and industrious girl who always looked out for her siblings. Growing up in war time was difficult, so one of her favorite past times became visiting the local Volunteers of America bible school meetings where she'd sing songs with the other children and listen to stories, waiting for the time when they could all enjoy a lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This is where she met Major Warren Webster, a minister, and introduced him to her mother, Mary. The two began dating and were later married. As she grew older, Patty became interested in theater and earned the lead in several school plays, her most favorite of which was The Blessed Virgin Mary in the 6th grade. As a teen she spent many weekend evenings roller-skating with friends. She attended Portland High and was active in student government. As a young homemaker, she enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for her mother and siblings. Pat enjoyed working outside the home and some of her jobs included quality control inspection at Data General and LL Bean. Pat loved attending sports activities for all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, including football, cheering, baseball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, hockey and rugby. She was always an active and vocal fan in the stands and was also a member of the PHS Booster Club. Known as "Nana Pat" to friends of the grandchildren and neighborhood kids, Pat also loved sitting outside on nice days watching the daycare kids play next door. Her most favorite times were those spent at family dinners, cookouts and parties next door at her daughter Darlene's. She got a taste of traveling fever when her daughter, Deb, and family moved around for military service and visited Texas and Hawaii during those times. Over the past 16 years she cultivated that love of traveling taking multiple trips with family to various parts of Mexico and the Dominican Republic, seeing the Rockets at Radio City Music Hall and attending plays in Boston and Ogunquit. Many of those trips were filled with side splitting laughter and joy. Pat was also a great dancer and taught all of her children to dance; maintaining until the end that "she" still had the most rhythm. She loved taking long rides on nice weekend days, stopping for lunch at Rockin' Ricks on the Causeway, going to Old Orchard Beach for Bill's pizza and pier fries, or exploring new places like Sarah's in Wiscasset after spending the day looking at the huge painted pumpkins in Damariscotta. She was an avid reader, devouring a book in a day or two and immediately searching for something new to read. She passed that passion for reading on to her children and grandchildren. She loved going to yard sales to search for new books to read, selecting only the most pristine to take home. Over the years finding the perfect gift for "Nana" often included a new book from her grandchildren. She looked forward to Saturday outings with her daughters, beginning with breakfast, which included her sister, Charlotte, and niece Kate. The rest of the morning would be spent perusing the Christmas Tree Store, heading to Big Lots for her special candy, or to check out the sales at JC Penney, ending the day with coffee and cookies in her kitchen. Wednesdays were for son, John. A nice long visit might turn into a ride to Harmon's for burgers or to Roy's in Auburn. These times were always looked forward to by both. Friday's were reserved for quiet time and outings with sister, Charlotte, which sometimes included lunches out at the Weathervane or Parker's where both enjoyed fried haddock or a haddock reuben, followed by a hot fudge sundae, Pat's favorite dessert. She is survived by her two daughters, Deborah L. McNally and companion Robert Howard, Jr. and Darlene Napolitano and her husband, Anthony, one son, John T. McGovern, Jr. and his wife Cindy, two sisters, (Katherine) Charlotte Thorne and her husband Sidney of Portland and Mary Jean (Tootsie) Raymond and husband Donald of Cape Elizabeth/Sebago Lake, a brother, David Greenleaf and wife Barbara of Astoria, NY, grandsons, Anthony Napolitano II and wife Jennifer, Nicholas Napolitano and wife Amanda, Joseph Napolitano and wife, Stephanie, Trevor McNally, John McGovern III and fiancée, Samantha Mowatt, Corey McGovern, and Kyle McNally, Granddaughters, Christina Roberson and husband, Joshua, and Meghann McNally and husband, Anthony Wilson, great grandchildren, Drew, Micky, Taylor, Simon, Sofia, Noah, Anthony, Dominick, Rocco, Nora, Eva, Lucas, and Brooke, as well as several nephews and nieces. Patricia was predeceased by mother, Mary Frances Greenleaf and stepfather, Warren Webster. The family wishes to thank Mom's team of caregivers at SCU 4 at Maine Medical Center, led by Dr. Benjamin Smith. You were amazing and encouraging to our Mom and our family.
