Obituary

Olive Bernice Springer Miller August 2, 1922 May 24, 2015 Gray - Olive Bernice Springer Miller of Gray Maine passed away May 24, 2015 at the grand old age of 92. Ollie was born August 2, 1922 in Fryeburg, Maine. She was the daughter of Wilfred Randall Springer and Hazel Adelia Whittaker Springer. She was predeceased by her parents and her five siblings; Wilfred G. (Bud) Springer, Dorothy Springer Martin, Herman R Springer, Burton W. Springer, and Sally Dion Williams. She is survived by her brother-in -law and sister-in law, Herbert and Lorraine Miller of Leesburg, Florida. Ollie moved to Portland with her mother and siblings after her father's death when she was 9. She graduated from Portland High School in 1940 and worked at G.C.Shaw Company and at the National Biscuit Company until her marriage. She married Lewis Merrill Miller of South Portland in 1948. They were married a few days short of 49 years at the time of his death in 1997. Ollie was a member of the Degree of Pocahontas. It was the female auxillary of the Improved Order of Redmen, a philanthropic organization founded in 1773 and included members of the Sons of Liberty and several U.S. presidents. She was active in that group well into her 80's. Ollie and Lew raised three daughters, and taught us all the importance of love, hard work, and family. Ollie was a housewife and mother extraordinaire. Her father was a baker and ran a diner and she inherited his gift. She is known for her homemade bread, pies, and wonderful meals and most famously for her whoopie pies. She made them by the dozens for family get- togethers and reunions and there was never one left. Ollie's proudest accomplishments were her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Eva Miller Sonn, and husband Eric of Salem, Connecticut, Laurie Miller Winters and husband Hermann of Gray, and Anna Lee Roy and husband John of Shapleigh. She is also survived by her grandchildren Michael Sonn of Connecticut, Miranda Winters Sandahl and husband Joshua, Courtney Winters Fullerton and husband Michael of New Hampshire, Kevin Roy and fiancé Julie Comley of New York, and Jason Roy and wife Kristen of Connecticut. Her great grandchildren are Olivia and Patrick Sandahl, and Liam and Gavin Fullerton, all of New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Sarah Ann Roy. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families and the friends she made wherever she went. She always had a smile on her face, a twinkle in her eye and a great sense of humor.
