Nicholas DiPietro November 24, 1935 October 5, 2014 Westbrook- Nicholas DiPietro, 78, of Westbrook, passed away peacefully at home, on October 5th, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born on November 24th, 1935 in Portland, Maine, a son of Concetto and Maria DiPietro. Throughout the years, Nick owned several businesses in the Portland area, including: a variety store, a scrap metal business, a pool hall, and a gas station. He retired from Nissan's Bakery as a mechanic and went on to be a bus driver for Waynflete School. Nick enjoyed spending time with his family, watching his favorite tv shows, playing poker and impromptu travels with the love of his life, Kay DiPietro. He was very proud of his Italian heritage. He loved cooking and was well known for his seafood chowder at Christmas time. He enjoyed cheering on his family in sporting events and was fond of his morning coffee with friends. Nick was a long standing member of the Italian Heritage Center, the Portland Eagles, and the Elks. Known for his charm, wit, and sense of humor, you couldn't help but be attracted to his bigger than life character. Lovingly known as ""Papa"", he was a father figure for many. His heart matched his size. He was always trying to feed everybody and couldn't help but get some on his shirt. Nick is survived by his three sons: Nicholas II and Concetto, both of Portland, Mario and his wife Jennifer of South Portland, daughter, Pierina Appleton and fiancé Tommy Brichetto of Westbrook, a brother Rudy DiPietro and his wife Pauline of Westbrook, sister in-laws Diane DiPietro, Maggie Moody, Marion Small and Sharon Peacock of Portland, and many grand and great grandchildren. Last but certainly not least, Nick is survived by his wife of 59 years, his one true love, Katherine DiPietro. Nick was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Anna Richio Mackie, grandson Concetto DiPietro, parents Concetto and Maria DiPietro, step-mother Lucia Donatelli DiPietro, brothers: Carmine, Tony, Mario and his wife Joanne, sister Pierina Axelsen and her husband Al. Visiting hours will be at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland from 4-7pm on Thursday October 9, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 72 Federal St, Portland at 10am Friday, October 10, followed by a burial at New Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
