Michael came to Scarborough, ME and moved to Scarborough Terrace Assisted Living on August 19, 2016 to live out the remainder of his life to be with his daughters, after being a resident of the Westchester County, NY area of 45 years. Michael was the oldest child of 3 sons of Rose and John Matero. He helped to raise his brothers after the death of his father when he was 9 years old. As a young man, he helped support his mother and brothers by working various jobs. When he was 22, he enlisted in the US Air Force and proudly served from 1957-1961 as a Staff Sergeant E-5 while based at the Skulthorpe Air Force Base in Great Britain. While stationed there in 1958, he met his wife of 57 years, Helen. They returned to America in 1961 with their daughter, Suzanne, upon discharge from the Air Force. His career history, post Military: began as a mechanic for Pan Am Airways and finishing as an Avionics Supervisor (overseeing the safety of many of thousands of passengers). His career with Pan Am spanned nearly 31 years. Michael's dream was to work for the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) which came to fruition in the late 90's and held the title of Aviation Safety Inspector. He was awarded the prestigious Department of Transportation FAA Charles Taylor "Master Mechanic" Award in 2006 and retired in 2012 from a long, passionate and dedicated career in the Avionics Industry. Michael loved anything related to aircraft, inclusive of books, models, movies, etc. He was proud of his heritage and proud to be an American and held such passion for this country.
