Obituary

Michael Lionel DuBois, Master Sergeant, USMC (retired) of Westbrook, Maine, passed away in Boston on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the age of 76, after a short illness. Son of the late Lionel F. "Duke" DuBois & Gabrielle T. "Gaby" (LeBlond) DuBois, Michael was born on June 30, 1949. Michael grew up in Brunswick and spent his early summers on Sebago Lake water skiing behind his father's boat. After graduating from Cheverus High School in '68, Michael joined the United States Marine Corps, immediately deploying to Vietnam, which began his 25+ years of honorable service, spanning Desert Shield/Storm. His reserve years included time at South Weymouth Naval Air Base, Fort Devens, drilling with the Seabees at Brunswick Naval Air Base, and was retired off the USS Constitution in Boston. He graduated from Northeastern in '76 with his BA, the same year that he met his beautiful wife, Ann Marie (Jepsen) DuBois, on Cape Cod. Michael went on to earn his MS from the school of Criminal Justice at Northeastern in '79. He worked for 25 years as a Criminal Investigator for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, ending his career as a Senior Special Agent. Michael would often say, "If you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life!" He shared his passion for this line of work by teaching at several colleges in the Portland area. Michael was a longtime Ski Patroller, beginning at Blue Hill in Canton, MA, and then Shawnee Peak, now Pleasant Mtn. in Bridgton. Michael instructed numerous CPR courses during that time, passing along his love of skiing to his children. A longtime runner, and "Friend of Bill W.", after retiring, Michael went on to work at Broadway Gardens, indulging his great love of plants. A constant presence at his favorite gym, Iron Legion, Michael worked with his beloved trainer, Andrew, earning himself nicknames, "Marshmallow," "Iron Mike," & "Rebar." Michael had a commitment to service, from his country to his local community, which included volunteering in the kitchen at Preble Street, as well as his time on the Board of Cheverus – a place he had great respect for and an obligation that had no financial reward associated with it. He spent as much time as he could with his children & grandchildren, supporting them throughout all their activities. Michael loved watching birds at the feeders in his backyard, going on several cruises, vacationing on Captiva Island, and was always ready with a joke. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Marie DuBois, having celebrated 45 years of wonderful marriage in June of this year; his son, Christopher; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan & Leah DuBois; daughter & son-in-law, Lauren & Stefano Caiazzo; his treasured grandchildren, Aubrey, Caiden, Marielle, & Elena; his sisters, Suzanne DuBois & Monique Hamilton (DuBois); his loving mother-in-law, Mary Jepsen; as well as many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law & bothers-in-law. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7pm on Friday, August 15th, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Saturday, August 16th, at 10am at St. Hyacinth Church, 268 Brown St, Westbrook, with FR. Robert Pecoraro, SJ, officiating. Military Honors will be rendered after the mass. Burial to be at a later date with immediate family. The family thanks the staff of New England Cancer Specialists, Maine Medical Center, as well as Brigham and Women's Hospital for the attention & care that Michael received while there. Michael was a supporter of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his name.
