Melvin J. Kramer January 15, 1925 November 2, 2014 Melvin J. Kramer, of Portland, died Sunday November 2, 2014 in Portland, Maine. He was born January 15, 1925 in The Bronx, New York. He served in the United States Army during World War II as an Army Medical Corpsman and was decorated for his service in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was a graduate of New York University and the University of Illinois and did advanced graduate work at Boston University. He spent his career working as a Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Director in the community mental health system in Western Massachusetts. Mr. Kramer was married for 67 years to his wife Helen. They retired to Maine in 1991 after living for many years in West Springfield, Massachusetts. In addition to his wife Helen, he is survived by his son Michael and daughter-in-law Elizabeth of Portland and his son Jonathan and daughter-in-law Ruth Chemerys of Cheverly, Maryland. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Jordan Kramer of Portland, Erica Kramer of Santa Fe , New Mexico, and Nora and Gillian Kramer of Cheverly, Maryland. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Rana. Mr. Kramer was a voracious reader throughout his lifetime and a music lover. He was particularly fond of poetry, opera, and a good cigar. During his retirement he enjoyed the arts and culture of Portland and the scenic Maine coast. His memory will live on in the hearts of the members of his family.
