Mary Murphy Curran November 25, 1935 January 8, 2015 Portland - Mary Murphy Curran, 79, of Portland died at home on Thursday January 8, 2015. She was surrounded by her family who loved her very much. Mary was a lifelong resident of Portland. The daughter of Joseph and Margaret Murphy, she was born on November 25, 1935. Mary attended St. Dominic's and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1954. She worked for W.T. Grant and later for Susse Chalet, and was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph's Church. Always putting her large family first, Mary was a dedicated mother, grandmother and wife. She delighted in family gatherings and trips and was happiest when surrounded by her eight children, twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mary was a marvelous cook and could often be found enjoying cooking shows. Her hobbies included Bingo and playing cards, especially with family around her kitchen table. She had a keen sense of humor and her home was often filled with the sound of laughter and fun. Mary and Ed enjoyed family gatherings by Sebago Lake in the summertime. They took many trips together, travelling extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Mary was predeceased by her parents and her brothers; Edward, Joseph, Francis and George. She is survived by Edward F. Curran, their eight children and their spouses; Edward and Sherry Curran, Kathryn Curran and her partner Rick Mace, Thomas and Polly Curran, Margaret and Kevin Billings, Patricia and Philip Bowden, Colleen and John Boswell, Mary Jo and Christian Chapman and Susan and James Turner, twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret Andrews and Patricia Sullivan as well as her nieces and nephews. Mary's family would like to thank VNA Hospice for their kindness and support. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours from 5 - 7pm on Monday, January 12, 2015 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tueday, January 13 at 10 am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 673 Stevens Ave, Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
