Martha "Marty" Hodgkins Rafter February 11, 1951 October 3, 2014 Portland - Martha ""Marty"" Hodgkins Rafter, 63, of Portland passed away at the Portland Center for Assisted Living on October 3, 2014. She was born in Portland on February 11, 1951, the daughter of Stanley R. and Alice (Saunders) Hodgkins. Marty attended Portland schools including Deering High School and two years at secretarial school. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Portland where she sang in the choir for many years. After the passing of her husband, John, she resided at Portland Center for Assisted Living where she thoroughly enjoyed the residents and caregivers. This became her second home for nine years until her death. While there, she was President of the Resident Council for five years and then Vice President. She was a member of the PCAL chorus, The Silvernotes. She also served on the Dietary Council to plan healthy meals for the residents. Blind since 21, she continued with computer skills and used them to convert 250 books into Braille for the Book Share Company, an organization that brings print books to the visually impaired. In 2008, along with Janice Parkinson-Tucker, Marty helped publish a book, A Life Well Lived: The Douglas Rafter Story, a book on the life of her father-in-law, Douglas Rafter, former Portland City organist. In 2013 Marty was a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maine Health Care Association's Remember Me project which honors innovative and interesting residents living in Maine's long-term care facilities. She was predeceased by her husband, John D. Rafter, her parents Stanley and Alice of Portland, and her in-laws, Douglas and Dorothy Rafter of Portland. Marty is survived by her brothers, Raymond S. Hodgkins of Florida, William A. Hodgkins of Freeport, sisters-in-law Marsha Hodgkins and Carol Hodgkins, many relatives and long-time friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 15 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland followed by interment at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
