Margaret Mary
Burnham
November 30, 1943 – April 28, 2026
MARGARET MARY BURNHAM, 82, passed peacefully on April 28, 2026, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was born on November 30, 1943, in Houlton, Maine, the daughter of John H. and Azilda M (Guerrette) Schools.
Margaret—known affectionately as Maggie—was a selfless, kind, and deeply compassionate woman who opened her heart to everyone she met. She would truly give the coat off her back to anyone in need. Her love of cooking was legendary; whether you were hungry or not, Maggie would make sure you were fed simply because she delighted in cooking for others. Her apple tarts and fudge were a must-have at every family gathering and remain cherished memories for all who knew her.
Above all else, Maggie’s greatest joy was her ever‑growing family. A mother extraordinaire, she adored children and devoted her life to loving and supporting her family. She was the very best “Nana” and “Grandma,” happiest when holding one of her seven grandchildren close and showering them with affection. She also treasured her close relationships with her nieces and nephews, holding each one dear to her heart.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband Arthur W. Burnham, brothers Neal, Leland, and Galen Schools, and her sisters Joyce Schools and Beverly (Schools) Honan.
She is survived by her sons, Shawn Lynes and his wife Kimberley of Westbrook, Kerry Lynes of St. Petersburg, Florida, and her daughter Laura (Burnham) Fagan of Scarborough. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Mitchell Lynes and partner Tonisha Smith, Colby Lynes, Brady Lynes and fiancée Sarah Wagner, Kerry Lynes Jr., Madison Lynes, Patrick Fagan and wife Ashley, and Lauryn Fagan and fiancée Noah Williams; as well as seven treasured great‑grandchildren.
Margaret is also survived by her brothers Richard Schools and his wife Loretta of Plant City, Florida, and Michael Schools and his wife Patricia of Buxton; her sisters Marie (Schools) Rice of Hudson, New Hampshire, and Dwyna (Schools) Macdonald and her husband Thomas of Wakefield, Massachusetts; and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staffs of Maine Medical Center, Seaside Healthcare Rehabilitation Center, and the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the compassionate and loving care Maggie received.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 8th, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland. A Memorial service will be at 11 Am. Burial will follow in Forest City Cemetery, Lincoln Street in South Portland.
