In Loving Memory of Luningning Atienza Valenzuela

Luningning (Loneng) Atienza Valenzuela was born on September 27, 1932, in Malabon, Metro Manila, Philippines, to Cecilia Lopez and Marcelo Atienza. She lived a life rooted in faith, family, hard work, and deep love for those around her.

On December 26,1956, she married the love of her life, Abelardo Valenzuela, Jr., with whom she built a strong and devoted family until his passing. Together they raised six children: Grace Valenzuela (Val Hart - deceased), Marilou Javier (Jack Javier - deceased), Divina Valenzuela, Cecilia Ariza (Eric Ariza), Mary Jane Valenzuela (Hung Chau), and Percival “Nik” Valenzuela (Yaisa Puy).

She was a proud and loving grandmother to twelve grandchildren—Joseph Ryan Javier, Jiselle Camille Javier, Jeremy Michael Javier, Juliane Shay Javier, Elizabeth Virginia Hart (Jason Mathew Samuel), Cedrick Paul Ariza (Brooklyn Moran), Joyce Carla Tran (Anthony Tran), John Lloyd Javier, James Carlo Chau, Yara Samantha Valenzuela, Roderick Ariza, Jr., and Phoebe Yamileth Valenzuela—and a cherished great-grandmother to Celina Rebecca Ariza, Jayce Kai Tran, Ayden James Tran, and Lila Rose Ariza. Her joy multiplied with each generation, and she followed their accomplishments with pride and devotion.

Loneng was one of five siblings and is predeceased by her brothers Mauro, Leonardo, Remigio, and Artemio. She was also predeceased by half siblings Rosa, Alejandra, Virginia, Ella, and Arsenio.

In 1955, she went to the Realistic Institute, a vocational school in Quiapo, Manila that taught beauty culture and dressmaking. Loneng learned the craft of hairdressing and opened a small beauty shop in Malabon. She was a beloved hairdresser, known not only for her skill but for the warmth, counsel, and friendship she shared with the many women who sat in her chair. Her ability to listen, encourage, and guide others became one of her defining gifts. She closed her shop when she had children and offered an on-call home service for haircuts, perms, and styling. She would often bring with her one of her daughters to assist her in providing hairdressing services.

In 1987, she immigrated to the United States and made her home in Maine, where she continued to touch countless lives with her kindness, wisdom, and generosity. A gifted cook, she expressed love through food, hospitality, and care for others. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, going to yard sales, and playing mahjong with family and friends. Though she completed only a fourth-grade academic education, she was immensely proud that all of her children earned college degrees—a testament to her sacrifices, values, and unwavering belief in education.

Her faith was central to her life. She was a devoted churchgoer who prayed the Holy Rosary daily and a devotee to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was an active member of Damas de Honor, a women’s church group in Malabon. Her faith sustained her and guided the counsel she so freely offered to friends and family alike.

Luningning Atienza Valenzuela was deeply loved by many—both in Maine and in Malabon—whose lives she touched through her compassion, faith, and quiet strength. She was a very good listener and a confidante to many relatives, friends, and neighbors. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the friendships she cherished, and the love she gave so freely. She will be remembered always with gratitude, respect, and enduring love.
