Louise T. Egeland October 12, 1916 February 11, 2012 PORTLAND - Louise T. Egeland, 95, died Saturday, February 11, 2012 at St. Joseph Rehabilitation and Residence. She was born in Quincy, MA the daughter of Purina Preti and John Baracchi. At 3 years old, following her mother's death, Louise was sent to be raised by her grandparents, Charles and Louise Garbarino of Munjoy Hill. There she was doted on by many aunts and uncles and was helpful in her grandfather's produce store where the famous 'Ruben Glue' taffy originated. Louise attended local schools and married Norman O. Egeland in 1936. She was a hard working mother who raised her three children alone. Later she was an active and integral part of raising her grandchildren. Louise Egeland took nothing from nobody. She worked hard to earn what was hers, always put her family first, she was proud and strong. Louise never drank, smoked, drove a car, wore makeup, or had her ears pierced preferring to keep life simple and affordable. She ran a tight ship and if you crossed her you'd know it. Suppers with Nana Louise were meat, potatoes and a veggie and she always offered a 'nice apple'. When the work was done and time to play she loved Scrabble, Yahtzee, crotcheting, Planet of the Apes, the original Star Trek and yes, World Wrestling. She loved a sale or settled for the generic. She is known for her work ethic, her sense of humor, and her keen sense of what is just and fair. Fearless in the face of adversity or hardship, she was protector and selfless provider. Our nana; the Matriarch has passed peacefully and with dignity. She was deeply loved. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, her daughter, Jeanette in 1997 and her son Norman in 2009. Louise is survived by her son, John of Portland a brother; John Baracchi of Connecticut a sisters; Josephine Baracchi of Connecticut six grandchildren, Robert L. Roukey, John, Charles and Richard Egeland, and Sandra and Stephen Horne; and nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 23 at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress Street, Portland. Arrangements are by A T Hutchins, LLC Independent Death Care, Portland.
