June Haskell Davis May 25, 1932 January 22, 2015 SCARBOROUGH - June L. Haskell Davis, known to friends and family as "June Bug" passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Jan. 22, 2015, at the Gosnell House in Scarborough. She was born on May 25, 1932, to the late Walter D. Haskell and the late Florence G. Simpson in Portland. June resided in Falmouth for the past 15 years. She graduated from Portland High in 1951 and was class treasurer her senior year and continued as treasurer at the once a month class reunion meetings which included both Portland High and Deering High graduates. During her years at Portland High, June was a majorette, and she played a huge role in the 65 piece marching band and 55 piece concert group, the largest P.H.S. band in history, directed by Clinton W. Graffam. June was an original member of Portland players, performing at the Strand Theatre on Congress Street, she was in several musicals and plays. June was voted "Most Witty" her senior year along with being active in Red Cross, bowling and loved swimming in the ocean. "Here's a girl with plenty of friends and plenty of talent," yearbook quote. After high school, June was employed in the office of Hannaford Bros. and later, 25 years at the first Jordan Marsh in Maine at the mall. She was a member of the first Red Hats in Maine called the Red Hat Tomatoes which included over half of Portland High classmates from various graduating classes. June was an avid country line dancer and loved country music. She also loved all animals especially cats, dogs and horses. June volunteered at the Barron Center for many years after her mother passed. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and attended spring training games in Florida, as well as her first Red Sox game at Fenway Park, meeting Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo, Big Papi being her favorite player. June was a den mother for Cub Scouts. She was the matriarch for the Davis and Haskell clan, hosting all the holiday parties and family gatherings. June was an amazing cook, making everything from scratch and never using a recipe. She was proud to be a Mayflower descendant of Stephen Hopkins, her great uncle Harry Hopkins, Walter Hopkins and uncle "Ducky" Haskell, Ralph Haskell, all grew up on Vinalhaven. June loved spending her summers on the island. June was a social butterfly and would light up any room when she walked in, everyone knew June and there is just not enough room to list all her close friends. June was predeceased by her father, Walter Haskell, her mother Florence Simpson Haskell; husband John W. Davis; and granddaughter Raina Davis Jensen. She is survived by her sons, William Davis, Walter Davis, Michael Davis, Todd Davis and daughter Jeanette Jensen; grandchildren Matthew Davis, Patrick Davis; many cousins on Vinalhaven and New England area; nephews, nieces; and her cat Sophie, named after her favorite actress Sophia Loren. Memorial visiting hours will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland, with prayers being recited at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers ,the family suggest a donation in memory of June Davis to: The Hawthorne House Activity Program 6 County Rd.
