It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Jolene Marie (LaChance) Marsters, 2 years ago, on May 16, 2020 at the young age of 63 years old. Jolene died peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough, Maine with her daughter Rebecca, brothers Christopher and Timothy and Timothy's wife Eileen by her side. Jolene, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, was diagnosed with a second type of cancer in 2015 and despite surgeries and current treatment regimens, the cancer continued growing relentlessly, ultimately causing her death. Jolene, one of seven children, was born in Waterville, Maine on May 7, 1957 to Joseph "Maurice" Lachance and Emelene (LaPlante) Lachance and raised in Norridgewock, Maine. She attended and graduated from Skowhegan Area High School. She took some undergraduate Nursing classes at the University of Southern Maine in Portland and Catholic Ministry courses at St. Joseph's College of Maine, in Standish. After graduating from high school, Jolene worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant in the Newborn Nursery and the Maternity unit at Redington-Fairview Hospital. She moved to Portland in 1980 where she worked at the Hannaford Corporate office in the Human Resource department, investigating fraudulent money orders. In April of 1991, Jolene welcomed her daughter, Rebecca and made the decision to stay home with her daughter, opening a private home day care which she kept open for the next 10 years. During these years she also was a preschool assistant at Stevens Avenue Congregational Church (SACC) Grammy's House Nursery School. She returned to corporate work in 2001, working for Apria Healthcare in various positions, as a patient advocate, receptionist and Patient Service Representative. Her last position was with Coram Healthcare as a Patient Service Representative, working closely with the Nursing Team, Pharmacists and New England branch team members to provide patients with home healthcare, IV nutrition therapy and IV medications. As a young woman, Jolene was very active in Catholic Youth Ministry and was an Adult State Board Advisor, representing St. John The Evangelist Church in South Portland, and St Pius X Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church, both in Portland and attended many youth retreats as an adult advisor. She was recognized with the "For God and For Youth" award for her service to the Catholic Youth Ministry in her community. Through the years she was also actively involved in religious education at Saint Pius X Catholic Church and Stevens Avenue Congregational Church (SACC). Raised as a Roman Catholic, Jolene also found a faith community at SACC and was thankful for the support those church members provided her during her illness. We celebrate Jolene for all she was to family and friends. She was a courageous and determined person with a strong work ethic learned from her parents' example. She was a warm, positive, fun person who sang wherever she went. She was always laughing and brought joy and color to the lives of those around her. Her biggest joy was spending time with family and friends and she'd always say "I'm a hugger", then proceed to ask for a hug. She is greatly missed by all of us. Jolene is preceded in death by her parents Maurice and Emelene. She is survived by her daughter Rebecca, siblings Anne Patten (Bryan) of Ohio, Debra Nickerson (Glenn) of Colorado, Anthony LaChance (Julie) of Colorado, Denise Violette (Andre) of Oklahoma, Timothy LaChance (Eileen) of New York, Christopher LaChance (Lori Holmes), Harry and Ginny Marsters of Portland, Maine and many nieces, nephews and extended family. She is also survived by Charles Marsters, Jr. of Sabattus, Maine. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 20, 2022 at 12 noon at Stevens Avenue Congregational Church located at 790 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine 04103, with a luncheon reception immediately to follow in the church downstairs hall.
