Obituary

John A. Steppacher 1923 - 2013 John A. Steppacher, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Falmouth Maine, surrounded by his family. Born in Elkins Park, PA. in 1923 to W. Maurice and Cecile L. Steppacher. He grew up in Croton on Hudson, NY, attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard College. His college years were interrupted by WW II, during which he served as first lieutenant in the US Air Force and was stationed in France for 2 years. This created a love of all things French for the rest of his life. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan (Pendleton), and children Brian Steppacher of South Portland, ME; Jill and Rob DeWitt of Portland, ME; and Lee Steppacher and Dan Shepard of Concord MA. He lived for 45 years in Chappaqua, and then Waccabuc, NY. He worked in the textile business, for Cone Mills Inc, and then as President of International Sales for Crompton Co. He sold products throughout the world including to the Soviet Union and other countries behind the iron curtain during the Cold War years. He lived in Hong Kong in the late 1970's and opened textile markets in the Far East. He loved to travel and see the world, whether on business or on family trips. He served on the board of the Harvey School in Katonah NY, and United Way of Northern Westchester; Also, The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester where he was president from 1972-1977. He owned a home in Castine, Maine and spent as much time as possible there. Eventually, he and Joan moved to Maine permanently in 2005. He leaves us with so many wonderful memories of summer days spent tending the garden; of playing the cello, singing and enjoying all kinds of music; of playing tennis; and sitting on the porch enjoying family and friends while the sun set over Penobscot Bay. Donations may be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, The Trinitarian Church of Castine, Maine or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 4:00pm, 121 Wilson Point Rd in Castine.
