John William O'Neil June 25, 1943 August 21, 2014 Portland - John William O'Neil, 71, of Portland passed away on August 21, 2014 at his home. He was born on June 25, 1943, a son of William and Marie (Cote) O'Neil. He grew up in Portland and attended Portland Schools. During high school, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Cuban Blockade, Vietnam and the Far East. After returning home, John worked for 35 years for Douglas Bros. in Portland. He loved hunting and fishing, taking trips to Montana and Alaska for fishing and was a member of the Falmouth Rod & Gun and Cumberland Rifle & Pistol Clubs. John also helped to start a Junior Rifle Club, where he was an instructor for over 25 years. John mostly loved his family and friends. He and his wife of 46 years, Joan, always had an open door to their nieces, nephews and friends, where they could always go and feel at home. John is survived by his wife Joan (Collins) O'Neil, his step-son Joey Collins his sister Patricia Dubar and his many nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours and a memorial service with military honors on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 2 - 4pm at A.T.
