John Frederick McGonagle November 3, 1945 January 5, 2015 Portland - John Frederick McGonagle, 69, of Portland, passed away on Monday January 5, 2015 at home after a six-month bout with cancer. He was born at Mercy Hospital on November 3, 1945. He grew up on Munjoy Hill, graduating from PHS in 1965. John was a Navy veteran, actively serving from October 1966 through October 1968, followed by three years in the reserves. He was honorably discharged in September 1971. John started his electrical career while in high school, working for the Stanley J. Leen, Co. Upon discharge from the Navy, he went through the apprentice program with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, eventually becoming a master electrician. Mixed with his electrical career, John shipped out as a Merchant Marine from 1980-82 and again from 1990-93. It was during his second tour that he rode his first camel. He finished his working career with Citgo Petroleum at their South Portland tank farm, retiring in November of 2012. John enjoyed his Munjoy Hill roots and the many lifelong friends he made growing up. He was also fond of George's Tavern, The Bunker and the annual Hillboys Reunions. Since retiring, he rekindled his interest in golf, joining Riverside North, and pool, joining two 8-ball leagues at Ernie's Pool & Darts. John was predeceased by his parents, John J. McGonagle - a lifelong resident of Munjoy Hill, and Jennie L. (Yates) McGonagle, originally from Camden, but a Hill resident convertee. He was also predeceased by his brother, James ""Whizzy"" McGonagle. Survivors include his sisters; Lorraine Grimaldi of Salisbury, MA, Margaret ""Maggie"" McGonagle of North Carolina, and his brother Thomas McGonagle who lives right around the corner from John on Ray St. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, along with his former wife, Kathy Hayes, currently residing in sunny, warm, Florida. The family would like to thank the Mercy Hospital, especially the Oncology Department for the kind and compassionate care John received.
