John Donald Lambert "Donald" March 21, 1927 March 29, 2015 Windham - John Donald Lambert, ""Donald"", 88, of Windham passed away on March 29, 2015 after suffering a stroke this past November. He was born in Portland on March 21, 1927, a son of Mabel M. Cochran and Louis B. Lambert. Donald attended Portland Schools before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served in Kobe, Japan and on the U.S.S. Cowie from 1944 through 1948. After returning from the service, Donald went to work for Songo Shoe. He became a Portland Firefighter in 1957, working with them for twenty years before retiring in 1977. After retiring, he followed his love of animals to work for the Humane Society in Windham. He lived with his daughter Carolyn, her husband Paul and their children Matt and Chris on Highland Lake in Windham. He was always young at heart and enjoyed bonfires with the younger crowd. Donald always enjoyed gambling and yard sales. He could not go past a store without buying a scratch ticket. He also would take weekly trips to Oxford Casino to pass the time. Every weekend, he and his daughter would go for a ride. It didn't matter where, but would include yard sales and junk stores and they would always stop for lunch. Donald greatly enjoyed cooking and loved Chinese food. He cooked dinner every day and loved the holidays with his family. One of his great family memories was fishing for Mackerel with his son Paul when Paul was a boy. Donald was predeceased his loving wife, Connie (Earles) Lambert in 1973 and his mother Mabel in 1979. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Lyden and her husband Paul, and his four sons; Paul Lambert and his wife Yvonne, Anthony Lambert, Richard Lambert and John Lambert, Jr, as well as twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to visiting hours from 4 - 7 pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 9am on Thursday April 2, followed by a Liturgy of the Word service at 10am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 72 Federal St, Portland.
