John J. Coyne April 4, 1928 August 20, 2012 Portland- John J. Coyne, 84, of Deering Pavillion, formerly of Gray Street, Portland, passed away on Monday August 20, 2012 following a brief illness. John was born in Portland, a son of Irish Immigrants, Thomas P. and Delia Coyne. John graduated from Cheverus High School in 1946 where he was the co-captain of the football team and was known as the "Cyclone Express". John also played baseball and ran track. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He worked as a freight handler for the railroad and later worked for J.J. Nissen Bakery and also worked construction for the Maine Turnpike. He was most recently a custodian for the Portland School System where he retired. John was pre-deceased by his brothers, Reverend Thomas Coyne, and James M. Coyne and his sister, Sister Mary Carmelita. John is survived by one nephew, James Coyne and two neices, Maureen Mehlhorn and Kathleen Coyne all of Maine. One nephew Thomas Coyne predeceased him in 2011. He is also survived by six great-nephews and one grand neice. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland, Maine. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
